STASIS: INTERACTIVE ART (BFA THESIS)

Through an interactive installation inspired from space age fashion, I used graphic design, light, space, and sound to blur the lines of expressive & functional art. I created a liminal space that ignited a fully immersive & dreamlike experience, centered around the loss of the self & new beginnings.

STASIS is a space where functional tools are used to express ideas of the self. The idea was to create a liminal space that allowed you to think about how you have changed over time. Blurring the lines of the past, present and future versions of yourself. While also blurring the lines of functional and expressive art in the process.

Inspired from the monolith from 2001: A Space Odyssey, The Liminal Door metaphorically symbolizes a transition into a liminal space. This sparks the users curiosity by being the first thing they see. While also not being where they expect it, physically outside the installation in the lobby.

This door is an example of how I blur the lines of functionality and expression. Although this door has a very functional design, it is not being used the way it is supposed to. I’m using a functional tool to express the idea of change. You don’t walk through this door. But once you go past it, you enter a liminal space.
